Etchu Owara

Etchu OwaraThe Etchu Owara has been handed down over more than 300 years in Yatsuo, a village nestled between the mountains in the southwest part of Toyama City. Visitors are enchanted by the dreamlike atmosphere as men and women dressed in matching kimono dance to the lyrical and plaintive music as they move through the village.

Kokiriko

KokirikoKokiriko is said to be the oldest folk song in Japan and has been preserved through the centuries in the Gokayama region as a prayer for a good harvest. Essential to Kokiriko is the sasara, a string-bound bundle of wooden plates. The elegant dance performed to the sounding of this instrument is truly an intriguing sight.

Mugiya-bushi

Mugiya-bushiThe Mugiya-bushi is a folk song that has been sung in the Gokayama region since ancient times. The contrast of the melancholic melody and the men dancing the gallant and dignified Mugiya-bushi dance has fascinated audiences through the years.

Yoshihisa Shishi-mai


Yoshihisa Shishi-maiIn Toyama Prefecture, there are more than 1,000 different kinds of shishi-mai (lion dance) that have been handed down through generations. Among them, the shishi-mai that has been preserved in the Yoshihisa area is an especially dynamic dance with a tengu (long-nosed goblin) swinging clubs, swords and torches as he fights a lion.
